2008 Ronstan Bay Challenge

The first serious long distance windsurfing/ kitesurfing race of the year was held on Saturday in the San Francisco Bay. The Ronstan Bay Challenge course consists of a short upwind leg followed by a downwind race to the end of the Berkeley Pier and then back upwind for a finish off the race deck at the St. Francis Yacht Club.

We have been having this southwest flow limiting the typical summer pattern in the bay. The result was slightly overcast and lighter winds. The formula racers rigged 10m sails and mostly 68 or 70cm fins. The conditions on the upper part of the course were patchy with a large hole just off Chrissy. The wind filled in as we sailed toward Berkeley.

Steve Sylvester had a phenomenal start and was able to sail toward the beach avioding the hole to round the mark well in first. He was followed by Al Mirel and Mike Z. There was a pack of about 10 boards trading places as we searched for the best wind and water conditions on the way down.

Mike Z somehow found better wind and deeper downwind angle to catch Steve and Al who both understood the layline. After rounding Mike surged ahead with great speed and angle upwind. The rest of the fleet played follow the leader, except Ben Bamer who just flew my me and Al and Mike Percey like we were standing still.

At the finish it was Mike Z, Steve Slyvester, Ben Bamer, Me, Al Mirel all within two minutes after 30 miles of sailing.

The kites had a epic battle with Chip taking the first line honors - check out - http://direwolff.wordpress.com/2008/06/01/ronstan-bay-challenge-kite-class-a-good-time-had-by-all/

for the full blow by blow in the kite fleet.

Much thanks to the St. Francis Yacht Club and Race Committee Volunteers for a great event...
